Our Silk Scarves

The scarf is the ultimate vehicle for a designer to present artwork in a garment that is truly wearable.

The current standard of luxury in scarves is a substantial silk twill that is screen printed and finished with a hand-rolled hem. There is a long history of beautiful work to justify that standard.

For our part, scarf development- both fabrics and construction- has been the most time consuming and carefully considered process we have undertaken to date.

After much study and testing, we have opted to place primary focus on printing techniques that allow for the greatest degree of color nuance and detail in our designs. The latest advantages in digital printing provide the optimum opportunity to achieve our desired outcome.

The silk scarves we are currently offering are essentially three different colors set on a background of a fourth color. However, when we graded the designs for digital printing, there were actually more than forty distinct shades of color in each print. In a design with multiple base colors, the shade count can reach into the hundreds. Such a result is not practicable with screen printing.

Digital printing is best done on the semi-sheer silks- such as habotai and crepe georgette. And such fabrics are best hemmed in the lightest and simplest way possible to prevent a weighty hem and allow for ideal draping. For that reason, we hem our scarves with a flat seam.

We will not tell you that the result is a better scarf than a fine silk twill with a hand rolled hem- it most certainly is not “better”. It is merely different, and allows for the highest degree of emphasis on subtle color shading in the design.
